Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation:
Definition:
Intentional conduct (verbal, physical, written, or electronic communication) that creates a hostile educational environment by substantially interfering with a student's educational benefits, opportunities, performance, physical, or psychological well-being
Bullying - Three criteria:
1. There is an imbalance of power or strength
2. It happens repeatedly over and over again
3. The person has the intent to harm
Can occur on:
School property, at school activities, or events, or school bus.
Types of Bullying:
Physical
Hitting, punching, shoving, kicking
Verbal
Teasing, name calling, rumor/gossip spreading, threatening
Emotional
Social exclusion, obscene gestures, manipulation
Cyber/Electronic
Insulting messages through phone/cell phone, text, instant messaging, email, Facebook, or other social networks
Prevention Strategies at Matsunaga:
Classroom guidance, cooperative learning, recognize and reinforce positive behavior, multicultural and diversity appreciation initiatives, social skills training, conflict resolution, prompt fair and consistent enforcement of school and classroom rules, visual prompts that foster and promote a safe environment for every student, anti-bullying programs & assemblies
Reporting Incidences of Bullying:
Any student, parent, close adult relative, or staff member may report an act of bullying, harassment, or intimidation, using MCPS Form #230-35: Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation Reporting Form. (Link provided)
This form is also available on the MCPS website, school administrative and counseling offices.
Investigating Reporting Instances of Bullying:
The school principal/designee investigates the incident and immediate and appropriate action is taken.
Working together with students, staff, parents, & the community, we can create and maintain a school environment in which each student feels healthy, safe, encouraged, supported and challenged each day!
